Drug and alcohol treatment in California

There are a plethora of drug and alcohol rehab litation facilities with widely varying treatments available in California. These facilities seek to provide addicts with an alternative choice.

The Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs is responsible for collating and distributing information concerning prevention, treatment and recovery of addictive behavior. The ADP website gives a wide range of options concerning residential rehabilitation centers as well as other services across California. They also offer free telephone services and a resource center.

What to expect from Rehabilitation
Most rehab programs will depend upon the addictive history of the client; the client’s lifestyle; the length of the addiction etc… Most programs seek to enable clients to break their addictions and then to live a stabilized and fulfilling life able to cope with everyday occurrences without sliding back into addiction. It may be that the center chosen, whether residential or outpatient will provide personal guidance and support to individuals on a one to one basis or as part of a group. Clients may need a program which is individually developed for them ñ and this approach is offered in several centers.
People fall into addiction due to a variety of reasons therefore it may take time to find the right treatment program. Treatment programs maybe long or short- term, may combine in and outpatient treatment, may include detoxification, counseling. Many centers in California make good use of the wonderful climate. Good rehabilitation is nowadays recognized as a collaborative process ñ combining different therapies and treatments to achieve the desired result. Another beneficial approach to breaking addictions is to be in treatment with others facing the same struggle. Attending a residential rehabilitation center means that a client’s whole focus can be on recovery.

An inherent part of any rehab program must always be education – many clients are unaware of the danger their lifestyle choice places themselves and others in. It may also be that clients need to understand how any addictions progresses, the cycles of abuse and how to break that cycle. Research has shown that there are often ëco-recurring’ disorders in those who are addicts. For example it is seen that over 44% of alcoholics will have suffered with mental health problems prior to their dependence on alcohol. As an addiction progresses it may give rise to depression or other mood related conditions. It may therefore be an important factor to consider a rehabilitation center which also offers treatment for these conditions.
